Revolutionary Routes of Trenton
Division of Lifelong Learning
On the bitterly cold and snowy evening of December 25, 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and led 2,400 Continental Army troops into Trenton, New Jersey. The surprise attack caught the Hessian troops garrisoned there off guard and shifted the tide of war in the Americans' favor.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary, The Old Barracks Museum is creating three guided bus tours in and around Trenton, N.J., with support from an NEH grant. Revolutionary Routes will not only explore the physical locations, but also how the ideals of rights and representative government written in the Declaration of Independence are reflected in New Jersey’s history.
