There is no constitutional question more important to our contemporary times than race and equality. But to begin to understand our own constitutional issues, we must understand their origins. The Constitution protected slavery in important ways. It was also a source of antislavery aspirations. This institute will explore how competition over constitutional values shaped politics, culture, and society.
