Since the NEH Office of Digital Humanities (ODH) was established over 15 years ago, the Digital Humanities Advancements Grants (DHAG) program and its previous iterations have resulted in nearly 550 awards totaling $52.5 million. Today, the numerous grant and fellowship opportunities offered by multiple NEH offices, as well as other funders, reflect the expansive role technology has come to play in the humanities.

The DHAG program currently holds two deadlines per year, offers three different funding levels, and supports projects at different phases of their lifecycles that respond to one or more of these programmatic priorities:

  • research and refinement of innovative, experimental, or computationally challenging methods and techniques;
  • enhancement or design of digital infrastructure that contributes to and supports the humanities, such as open-source code, tools, or platforms;
  • evaluative studies that investigate the practices and the impact of digital scholarship on research, pedagogy, scholarly communication, and public engagement

In addition to its focus on supporting innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging digital projects, the DHAG program can also support 1) early-stage planning activities and 2) efforts to revitalize, recover, and sustain existing DH projects and infrastructure.

As the needs of the field evolve, ODH continues to evaluate and refine the DHAG program with input from the broad community of potential applicants and grantees, as well as those who benefit from NEH-funded work. This call for comments seeks written feedback on a series of topics that will inform the scope, requirements, and outreach for the DHAG program.

You may wish to consult the Notice of Funding Opportunity, FAQ, and program resource page in preparing your responses.
