Script created to tell history of ‘Moving Photographs’

(March 19, 2019)

The photographs of a bygone era captured Melanie O’Meara’s imagination years ago.

“Some of these photographs have haunted me,” said O’Meara, an assistant professor in Augusta University’s communications department, who along with a group of students, has created a dramatic production based on them.

“Moving Photographs: A Vanishing Georgia” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 21-23 and at 3 p.m. March 24 at the Augusta University Maxwell Theatre.

More than 30 photographs from the Vanishing Georgia Photographic Collection have been used in the production. The collection contains nearly 18,000 images and is the result of a Georgia Archives project started in the mid-1970s “to locate and copy historically significant photographs held by individuals throughout the state of Georgia. A National Endowment for the Humanities grant supported the expansion of the project from 1977-1979,” according to the Georgia Archives website.
