The National Endowment for the Humanities mourns the passing of William G. Bowen, a distinguished humanist and social scientist who transformed the academic landscape. President Obama awarded the 2012 National Humanities Medal to Bowen for “his contributions to the study of economics and his probing research on higher education in America.” Bowen's life's work was grounded in the belief that the humanities should be accessible, not just to the elite but to all, especially women and minorities. Through his writings and his leadership at Princeton University and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Bowen embodied the ideals of NEH, a federal agency that funds a broad range of humanities projects across the country. Read More.
