The National Endowment for the Humanities mourns the passing of Frank Deford, the legendary sportswriter and recipient of the 2012 National Humanities Medal. “A dedicated writer and storyteller, Mr. Deford has offered a consistent, compelling voice in print and on radio, reaching beyond scores and statistics to reveal the humanity woven into the games we love,” read the official White House citation. A proud moment for Deford and NEH, it spoke eloquently to the fact that the humanities are near the heart of the human experience in all its many forms. Read more.
