Motheread/Fatheread® Hawai‘i is a nationally acclaimed family literacy program aimed at helping parents talk about the books they read to their young children, combining the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues. In every class session, participants read out loud from a children's book and learn critical literacy skills in a group structure that supports their own sense of worth and ability. This approach teaches the “why” of reading as well as the “how" and uses themes and issues culled from the book to strengthen the bonds between parent and child.

Funded project of the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
