Margaret Chase Smith Essay: The Urgency of Democracy

In the Maine Policy Review Chairman Adams describes how Maine has continued to produce impressive female political leaders who were inspired to serve by their civics and political history classes. He says Maine Senator, Margaret Chase Smith, is remembered as the first of remarkable female leader that no doubt inspired the careers of Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, and Chellie Pingree, among others. Later in the essay, Chairman Adams goes on to illustrate that learning about US history and the values of American democracy in school help to shape a democratic political culture.
