"Journey to the West" is a Chinese novel published in the 16th century. The novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang who traveled to the "Western Regions" to obtain sacred texts and returned after many trials and much suffering. The book is the selected feature for the UW-Madison Center for the Humanities's annual program that deeply explores a classic humanities world text. High school teachers study the text with university faculty. They teach the book throughout the academic year and then their students take part in the Annual Student Conference on the UW-Madison campus to share their projects focused on the book.
