Within a year of the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839, photography found its way to Maine, creating a lasting record of the appearance of the state’s people and places during the mid-nineteenth century. Maine Historical Society will showcase its extensive holdings of early Maine photographs, which vividly illustrate life in the state during the period leading up to the Civil War.
Funded project of the Maine Humanities Council. The Maine Humanities Council is a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
