Rising Voices/Hothaninpi

October 23, 2015

Using the Lakota language as a lens, "Rising Voices/Hothaninpi" poses universal questions about the value of indigenous languages and the broader cultural implications of their loss. The film includes scenes of attempts to revive Lakota in a variety of settings, from tribal schools to basketball courts. "Rising Voices/Hothaninpi" is a mix of verité scenes, archival material, and short, Lakota-directed films included throughout for poetic punctuation and Lakota perspectives. Presented in four acts, the film addresses humanities themes that include cultural assimilation; consequences of language loss; and the role non-Indians should, or should not, play in efforts to save the Lakota language.
