William "Bro" Adams speaks with Washington Post critic Philip Kennicott about the past fifty years of the NEH’s mission to “serve and strengthen our republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans.” As he begins his second year presiding over the grants program, he will look to the organization’s hopes for the future as he steers it into its next half century.
