The Mississippi Humanities Council [1] is cosponsoring an event that brings current Mississippi and United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey to Jackson State Univeristy. Trethewey will hold a reading of her poetry on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 3 pm in Room 166/266 of the Dollye M.E. Robinson College of Liberal Arts Building. The event is hosted by the Margaret Walker Center [2] at Jackson State University and is free and open to the public.
Trethewey was named the Mississippi Poet Laureate in January 2012 and was soon after named the 19th U.S. Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress. She is the first person to serve simultaneously as a state and U.S. Laureate. Trethewey is the author of four poetry collections, including Thrall; Native Guard, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner in Poetry; Bellocq’s Ophelia; and Domestic Work. She has also written a nonfiction book, Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
