In late August and early September 2011, New York State was hit by two damaging storms, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. The damage wreaked by the two storms affected communities across the state, including numerous cultural organizations such as libraries, museums, and historical societies. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York Council for the Humanities [2] was able to start offering $1,000 Hurricane Recovery Grants [3] to affected organizations. The council has now awarded more than $30,000 to 31 organizations [4], attracting more than $1 million in matching funds. The New York Council has also begun a book donation program [3] to sites affected by the storms.
