On August 3, the CNN Belief Blog published a story  on the NEH-funded documentary Besa: The Promise . The critically acclaimed film recently premiered at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival . Besa chronicles the inspiring story of Albanian Muslims who helped rescue Jewish refugees during World War II. Following one Albanian’s attempt to fulfill his father’s wish of returning treasured prayerbooks to a Jewish family, the documentary brings the past vividly to life and honors those who quietly, but successfully, fought against the Nazis.
Besa was funded as a part of the NEH’s “Bridging Cultures through Film” series. For more information on the film, see NEH Chairman Jim Leach’s remarks from a screening of the film  at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum .
