“Mr. President, today I wish to recognize the 40th anniversary of the South Dakota Humanities Council, SDHC. As an organization dedicated to promoting culture and our State's rich history, SDHC plays an integral role in fostering an interest in history, literature, and other humanities subjects. Founded in 1972, this important anniversary gives us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate 40 successful years of SDHC humanities programming in South Dakota.”

With these words, Senator Tim Johnson recognized the SDHC’s 40th Anniversary in the Congressional Record for the 112th Congress. The Council was founded 40 years ago on July 15, 1972 when the first full committee meeting was held in the South Dakota State Capitol Building in Pierre, South Dakota.
