We the People: Council Projects

April 11, 2012 | By Federal/State Partnership Staff

We the People was a program of the National Endowment for the Humanities designed to encourage and enhance the teaching, study, and understanding of American history, culture, and democratic principles.

NEH was founded on the belief that cultivating the best of the humanities has real and tangible benefits for civic life. Through We the People, NEH has rededicated itself to this mission and is leading a renaissance in knowledge about American history and principles among all our citizens. We the People was launched on Constitution Day, September 17, 2002.

Since the inception of the We the People program, state humanities councils have received almost $40M in WTP funding (including both outright and matching funds) beyond the regularly appropriated general operating support grants.

The agency-wide We the People initiative has generated $96,872,000 in appropriated funds and $14,877,000 in matching funds made available to grantees. We the People has leveraged $32,800,000 in outside funding.
