Deputy Director Michael Shirley attended the 73rd Peabody Awards at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on May 19. Two NEH-funded films were honored: The Latino Americans and The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. The George Foster Peabody Awards are the highest honor awarded to broadcast journalism for stories that matter.
Division Director Karen Mittelman represented the Endowment at the Federation of State Humanities Councils ’ National Humanities Conference in Birmingham, AL.
Karen will be traveling to St. Louis, MO, November 22-24 to attend the National Council on Social Studies meeting where she will participate in a discussion of the Created Equal film set. She will also visit the Missouri History Museum to see the 1968 exhibit there, which was funded by the Endowment.
Program Officer David Weinstein participated in a meeting at the University of Maryland Baltimore County to discuss digital humanities with representatives from the University of Maryland and Maryland Humanities Council.
Division Director Karen Mittelman conducted a session about NEH funding programs at the Mid Atlantic Museums Association conference in Washington.
Division Director Karen Mittelman traveled to Detroit to visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and see the Endowment-funded exhibition, Bandits &Heroes, Poets & Saints: Popular Art of the Northeast Brazil. Karen also traveled to New York City to conduct a webinar for “Created Equal ” venues at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History . While in New York, she conducted a site visit to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum to see the “Shop Life” exhibit which was funded by the Endowment.
Program Officer Patricia Brooks represented the Division of Public Programs at the annual meeting of the American Association for State and Local History  in Birmingham, Al.
Program Officer Marc Ruppel attended a screening of Containment , a documentary film funded by the Endowment, at Harvard University.
Program Officer Jeff Hardwick represented the Division of Public Programs at Afropop Worldwide ’s 25th Anniversary celebration in New York City.
