This program is open to scholars in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences who have received their Ph.D. or its equivalent by the time of application. Applicants must submit a carefully formulated research proposal that reflects an understanding of the present Chinese academic and research environment. The proposal should include a persuasive statement of the need to conduct the research in China. In addition, applicants must possess an adequate working knowledge of Chinese; otherwise, a careful explanation of how the applicant will compensate for this is required. Grant tenure is from four months to one year of continuous research in China. The grant period must fall between July 1, 2013, and December 31, 2014. Awards are intended to allow leave from teaching and administrative responsibilities. There is no financial support for dependents. To be eligible, applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with three years continuous residence in the US.
