The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is a constituent program of the J. Paul Getty Trust. GRI provides intellectual leadership through its research, exhibition, lecture, and publication programs, and service to diverse scholars worldwide through scholar residencies, fellowships, online resources, and access to the Research Library.
The Library’s books and materials are focused on the history of art, architecture, and archaeology with related materials in the humanities and social sciences ranging from prehistory to contemporary art. The collections were originally organized around western European art and culture, but have expanded to include Latin America, Eastern Europe, and selected regions of Asia and Africa. The research library includes books, periodicals, and auction catalogues; a photo study collection; special collections consisting of rare books, single prints and drawings in albums and collections, collections of rare photographs, optical devices, 20th-century videos, and manuscripts and archives.
Since 1985 the Research Institute has invited scholars, artists, and other international cultural figures to work at the Getty Center and Getty Villa on projects related to an annual research theme. While in residence, distinguished scholars and emerging pre- and postdoctoral fellows pursue their research projects and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty scholar community. Two GRI-NEH postdoctoral fellowships are available annually through the 2014-2015 scholar year.
