African-American news photographer “Teenie” Harris’s career at the Pittsburgh Courier spanned forty years, during which time he recorded daily life in Iron City’s many diverse neighborhoods. A lifeguard, above, offers an impromptu swimming lesson during the first day of a public pool’s integration in 1951. The Carnegie Museum of Art has received NEH support to conserve, catalog, scan, and archivally store negatives from the Charles “Teenie” Harris African American Image Collection.
