Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story Atlanta University Center

January 24, 2013 – May 24, 2013

Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story is a groundbreaking retrospective of the works of African American photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris (1908-1998). On loan from Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art, the exhibit features selections of Harris's most artistic and historically significant images.

Harris's photographs —made in his studio for the Pittsburgh Courier, a leading national black newspaper of the time— chronicle a vibrant black urban community during the Jim Crow and civil rights eras. He captured the poetry of everyday common experience, as well as the extraordinary people who shaped the 20th century.

This traveling exhibit was made possible by a grant [1] from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
