Frequently Asked Questions About PRISM

  1. What is PRISM?

    PRISM -- the Panelist/Reviewer Information System -- is a database of prospective reviewers used by the staff of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The NEH peer review system relies on the advice and recommendations of humanities scholars and experts in other relevant fields. The information you provide will be used only by the NEH for the purpose of identifying and selecting panelists and reviewers.

  2. Who should create a PRISM account?

    Prospective or current reviewers or panelists, applicants, grantees, grant administrators, and others who have contact with the National Endowment for the Humanities, may use PRISM.

  3. What information is collected by PRISM?

    You can provide contact information, your educational background and current institutional affiliation, your humanities expertise, and additional information you think is relevant.

  4. Why do you want my Social Security Number?

    People who serve as panelists for the NEH are paid an honorarium, and the NEH Accounting Office requires a Tax Identification Number or SSN for all such transactions. For this reason we need accurate SSNs for all panelists.

  5. But is my PRISM information secure?

    Yes. All form data submitted via the PRISM website is encrypted using SSL technology. In addition, your SSN is stored in an encrypted form, so no one knows what it is unless it's unencrypted by the NEH Accounting Office.

  6. Can I update my PRISM information after I have entered it?

    Yes, please do! You may make changes to your PRISM record as often as you wish. We encourage you to keep your PRISM record current. The more accurate your PRISM record is, the more useful it is to the NEH.

  7. How do I create a PRISM account?

    Go to the "New User Account" page. Fill in all the fields. You must choose a username and password, supply your email address, SSN, etc. Click the "Create account" button. Once you have done this, you will be able to log in and begin entering your PRISM information.

  8. What if I forget my PRISM username or password?

    Click the "Send username/password" button on the main login page. Enter the email address you used when creating your account. When you submit the form, your login information will be sent to you by email. Be sure not to create duplicate accounts.If you have junk mail or spam filters in place, be sure that they allow email sent from prism@neh.gov. If you have questions, send a message to prism@neh.gov.

  9. I'm not interested in serving as a panelist. Should I still create a PRISM record?

    Yes. Depending on the nature of your relationship with the NEH, you may not need to complete some sections of the PRISM form. For example, you may use PRISM only to provide the NEH with your most up-to-date contact information. When you create your PRISM account, you can indicate that you do not wish to serve as a panelist.

  10. Can I apply for a grant by completing the PRISM form?

    No. To apply for a grant from the NEH, please go to the Grants section of the NEH website.

  11. Will the NEH share the information I provide with anyone else?

    Absolutely not. Any information you provide will only be used by NEH staff members for the purposes of identifying suitable reviewers and panelists. You may wish to review the NEH privacy policy.

  12. Can I be a panelist if I have applied for an NEH grant?

    No person listed at the time of panel service as the project director on any application pending in any Endowment program may serve as a panelist.  (Please note that “time of panel service” begins from the time that a panelist is invited to serve until the completion of the panel meeting and/or the submission of final ratings for the applications under review.)

  13. My field of expertise doesn't appear on the lists. What should I do?

    Choose the field closest to your field of expertise. If you wish to provide an explanation, you may do so in the "Additional information" section accessible from the main menu.

  14. I tried to enter some text in the "Additional Comments" section and I got an error message. What's going on?

    For security reasons, certain characters are not allowed in text fields. Some of the common character combinations not allowed are:

    • < followed immediately by any character
    • expression(
    • &#
    • script:

    You cannot use any of these character combinations in any of the fields on the PRISM forms.

  15. What if I need more space?

    You may use the "Additional Information" section accessible from the main menu.

  16. Can I change my username or password?

    Sure. From the main menu choose "Edit user account." Once you have chosen a new username or password, you will need to use them the next time you log in.
