Francisco Menendez: African Slave to Freedom Fighter

February 8, 2014

Francisco Menendez: African Slave to Freedom Fighter.  Brought to the British colonies as a slave, Francisco Menendez escaped his servitude and fled to Spanish Florida. Granted his freedom by the Spanish crown, Menendez went on to help found Fort Mose, the first free black settlement in North America, and defend St. Augustine from British invasion. He eventually found himself aboard a Spanish privateer ship, attacking the British that once enslaved him. Actor Bob Devin Jones portrays one of the most colorful characters in Florida's history as he reflects upon his adventures.

Sponsored by the  African American Club of Hernando.   Funded by the Florida Humanities Council. FHC funding comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Florida, and private donations.
