Winterthur is a public museum, library, and garden that supports the advanced study of American art, culture, and history. The collections consist of American material culture with strong supporting resources in British and Continental art and culture.
Winterthur offers an extensive program of short-and long-term fellowships open to academic, independent, and museum scholars, including advanced graduate students. Resources for research from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries include period trade catalogs, auction and exhibition catalogs, an extensive reference photograph collection of decorative arts, printed books, manuscripts, and ephemera. Museum collections include artifacts and works of art made or used in America to 1860, with a strong emphasis on domestic life. Winterthur supports a program of scholarly publications, including Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture.
NEH fellowships are available for 2014-2015. NEH Fellows must have received the Ph.D. prior to the application deadline. NEH Fellows receive office space and computer support and 24-hour access to the library’s circulating collections. Museum collections access is available for artifact-based research. A furnished stone farmhouse on the Winterthur grounds serves as the fellows’ residence. NEH Fellows also participate in the lively scholarly community at Winterthur, the nearby Hagley Museum and Library, the University of Delaware, and other area cultural institutions.
