I wanted to let readers know that I will be at the Modern Language Association's annual convention this year, as will my colleague Steve Ross, Director of the Office of Challenge Grants.  If you are in San Francisco, please feel free to find us to discuss project ideas, funding opportunities, or even your favorite book.  If you have trouble tracking us down among the thousands of attendees, you can be certain to see us at the NEH workshop on Friday Sunday, 28 December, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Yosemite B, Hilton San Francisco (note: the workshop is listed only in the Convention News & Program Update [PDF, page 6], and not in the official program).  There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion, and we will provide an overview of the various grant programs NEH has to offer.

We are very pleased to announce that, in partnership with the Joint Information System Committee (JISC) in the United Kingdom, NEH will be offering a second round of grants for the Transatlantic Digitization Collaboration program.   The guidelines should be available later this month, but we wanted to alert potential applicants so that you could start developing the necessary partnerships.

The deadline for applications will be in March 2009.

I wanted to bring readers' attention to a few NEH events at the Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Science (http://dhcs.uchicago.edu), which will take place November 1-3 at the University of Chicago.  A funder's panel is scheduled during the pre-colloquium activities for the first day (November 1), and I will also be available during the poster sessions to discuss digital humanities projects and the NEH funding that supported them.  If you want to speak to a program officer about grant opportunities at NEH, and you happen to be in the Chicago area, this is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn about our programs, but also about the collaborative work of your peers.

Registration is set at the very affordable price of "free," but you need to register by this Friday.

The guidelines for the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants are now available. The deadline for this grant program is October 8, 2008. Read on to find out more about the changes that were made to the guidelines and how you can get help with the application process.

We have good news for those of you eagerly anticipating the full set of guidelines for the new 2008 Call for Joint Digitization Projects, which is part of the DFG/NEH Bilateral Digital Humanities Program that we announced a few weeks ago.  The Digitization guidelines are now available on the NEH Web site and the DFG Web site.  Note that while there may be some administrative differences between the two sets of guidelines, the core requirements are the same.  At least one German and one U.S. institution will collaborate on a single proposal, which will be submitted to NEH by the U.S. partner and to DFG by the German partner.  The combined sum of the request can range from $100,000 to $350,000 (approximately 70,000 to 240,000 € ) for...

The above title, "How to Get a Grant from NEH," is not my own, but from an article in the July/August issue of Humanities magazine, now available online at the NEH Web site.  If you've not had the opportunity to attend a grants workshop or discuss a project with a program officer, this is a great introduction to some of the most important--and often most overlooked--bits of advice when applying for a grant (such as "Read the guidelines!").  Also included is an overview of the review process, an introduction to Grants.gov, and the reminder that NEH program officers are always available to answer questions.  Highly recommended reading for all potential applicants.

We are happy to announce that the NEH and the DFG will be offering two new joint grant programs. The guidelines will be available shortly [edit: the Digitization Guidelines are now available], but in the meantime, please see the NEH/DFG release below:

DFG and NEH to Offer Two Grant Programs in the Digital Humanities

The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V., DFG) in Germany and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the United States recently signed a memorandum of understanding to offer support for digital humanities projects.  Under this agreement, the NEH and DFG hope to encourage American and German researchers to collaborate on innovative digital humanities projects.   DFG and NEH are currently developing two Bilateral Digital Humanities Grant Programs, which will have deadlines in early autumn 2008:

Our colleagues at JISC recently passed along a call for papers (PDF) for the Digital Resources in the Humanities and Arts conference, which is to be held at the University of Cambridge from September 14-17. Given our recent work with JISC, this year's conference theme is particularly compelling: discussions of "new collaborative environments, collective knowledge and redefining disciplinary boundaries."  The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2008, so act now!
