Project directors have put out a call for participants for two upcoming digital humanities workshops that have received recent funding from NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants.
In February 2009 the University of Richmond’s conference on “Visualizing the Past: Tools and Techniques for Understanding Historical Processes” will focus on two questions:
• How can we harness emerging cyberinfrastructure tools and interoperability standards to visualize, analyze, and better understand historical events and processes as they spread out across both time and space?
• How can user-friendly tools or web sites be created to allow scholars and researchers to animate spatial and temporal data housed on different systems across the Internet?

I wanted to bring readers' attention to a few NEH events at the Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Science (http://dhcs.uchicago.edu), which will take place November 1-3 at the University of Chicago. A funder's panel is scheduled during the pre-colloquium activities for the first day (November 1), and I will also be available during the poster sessions to discuss digital humanities projects and the NEH funding that supported them. If you want to speak to a program officer about grant opportunities at NEH, and you happen to be in the Chicago area, this is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn about our programs, but also about the collaborative work of your peers.
Registration is set at the very affordable price of "free," but you need to register by this Friday.

Just a quick announcement that the deadline for the Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities program will be February 18, 2009. I should note that a slightly revised version of the guidelines will go up on the NEH website in the next few weeks. However, the revisions will be quite minor, so please do consult last year's guidelines in the meantime as you begin to plan your application. Based on your feedback, we set the deadline earlier in the year so that, if funded, you will have the option of holding your workshop or institute in the summer of 2009. I will send out another announcement as soon as the new guidelines are ready.
Update: The new guidelines are now available!

I'm happy to say that the guidelines for the DFG/NEH Symposia and Workshops Program are now available. This program, funded by the NEH and the DFG in Germany, is designed to fund joint workshops between American and German scholars and scientists who are working together on digital humanities projects or discussing issues related to the field. Deadline for applications is November 4, 2008.
I should note that this is the second of two joint programs we have with the DFG. The earlier program is called DFG/NEH Joint Digitization Projects and has a deadline of October 15, 2008.
If you are working with (or are considering working with) colleagues in Germany, I urge you to check out these two programs.

As regular readers know, the NEH's Office of Digital Humanities has an ongoing Humanities High Performance Computing (HHPC) Initiative. I wanted to let you know about two upcoming HHPC-related events.
On Monday, October 6, NEH staff will present at a workshop here in Washington, D.C., entitled "Humanities Applications for the World Community Grid." This full-day workshop will feature IBM computer scientists who will conduct a hands-on session describing how high performance computer systems can be used for humanities research. [...]
