Frequently Asked Questions

Fellowships at Digital Humanities Centers

Must I apply through Grants.gov?

Yes. All applications to this program must be submitted via Grants.gov. Instructions for submission to Grants.gov can be found in the guidelines.

May I apply to the Fellowships at Digital Humanities Centers program as an individual?

No, only U.S. institutions may apply. Each institution must also identify an individual scholar as a prospective fellow.

The proposed fellow is a faculty member at the institution at which the digital humanities center is located. Is he/she eligible?

Yes, but the fellow may not be a staff member of the hosting digital humanities center.

The proposed fellow is not U.S. citizen, but is a legal resident. Is he/she eligible?

Yes, if he/she will have been a resident of the U.S. for at least the three years immediately prior to the application deadline.

May the proposed fellow be a graduate student completing his/her Ph.D.?

No. Persons enrolled in academic programs are not eligible for this grant. A prospective fellow who has passed his/her dissertation defense is eligible if the degree will be conferred before the beginning of the fellowship period and he/she meets the citizenship or residency requirements listed in the guidelines. In this situation, a letter signed by the dean or a member of the doctoral committee testifying to the degree completion date must be submitted; it may be faxed to the attention of Cathy Dennis at 202-606-8558, or it may be included as a PDF attachment to an e-mail message sent to fdhc@neh.gov.

Does the fellow need to have an advanced degree, such as a Ph.D., to be eligible for this grant?

No. However, the fellow’s resume should include publications, presentations, and other related experience that demonstrate his/her scholarly qualifications and ability to carry out the proposed project.

My project involves converting a collection of images and papers into a digital archive and a related website. Is it eligible for support?

Digitization projects are eligible only if they include a significant humanities research component. Applicants proposing straight digitization projects should discuss their plans with the NEH Division of Preservation and Access.

What help is available for applicants?

NEH staff will answer questions and review drafts of proposals submitted at least six weeks before the deadline. A response cannot be guaranteed if the draft arrives later. You may contact staff by telephone (202-606-8200) or e-mail (fdhc@neh.gov). In addition, you may request copies of proposals that have been successful.

The institution’s grant application last year was unsuccessful. Will this be held against it if it applies again this year?

No. NEH regards all applications as new applications.

My application for a Fellowships at Digital Humanities Centers grant was unsuccessful. Is there anything I can do to increase my chances for success next time?

You may ask for copies of the evaluators’ comments about your application, by sending an e-mail message to fdhc@neh.gov. You may also submit a draft proposal for comment by NEH staff up to six weeks prior to the deadline.
