CH-50156, Southeastern Library Network:
Library Funding Initiative for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. An NEH challenge grant awarded to the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) in 2005 ensured that online users of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP)—an online reference work—would have free access to it. The challenge grant will achieve this goal by facilitating the creation of a $4.125 million endowment. Almost half of the endowment ($2 million) is accounted for by the NEH challenge grant: $500,000 from NEH, released when SOLINET received $1.5 million in contributions from third parties. By establishing a permanent flow of income for the SEP, the challenge grant will enable the SEP to avoid charging a fee for access to the entries. SEP entries cover a wide variety of topics, such as Feminist Political Philosophy, The Logic of Action, The Mathematics of Boolean Algebra, and Modularity of Mind.
